Latin American History in a Global Context, 19th Century to Today

This course explores Latin America’s interactions with the wider world since the nineteenth century. It explains why global connections are at the heart of Latin America‘s history and shows how, in turn, Latin Americans themselves have shaped – and questioned – globalization throughout the last two centuries. Addressing chronological and structural issues, we will cover topics such as: economic globalization; Latin America’s transnational/social relations with the world, including migration and tourism; its cultural and its media history; its troubled political past made up of civil wars, revolutions, foreign interventions, dictators and democracy; urbanization, poverty, and development policy; the global drug trade and anti-narcotics policies. Finally, the course will also cover more practical questions such as how to improve your presentation and writing skills as well as your time-management.

This course explores the impact of National Socialism on Germany and the world. It explains how and why Hitler and the National Socialist German Workers’ Party (NSDAP) came to power, on which ideology and principles the ‘Third Reich’ (1933-1945) was based upon and why the Second World War took its particular shape. Partly chronologically, partly structural, it familiarizes students with the rise and demise of one of the most influential political movements of the 20th century. Furthermore, the course includes a field trip to a German concentration camp to provide participants with on-site experience.
