The Ancient and Medieval Philosophy Ph.D. Program is part of the Philosophy Doctoral School at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), Budapest. We offer courses and dissertation supervision in the history of ancient Greek and Roman philosophy, in Patristic thought, in Medieval Scholasticism, and in ancient and medieval Indian philosophy.
The programme focuses on logic and its applications in the philosophy of science, particularly in the foundations of mathematics, physics, linguistics, and the social sciences. Beyond a few core courses and a joint four-semester seminar series, providing a kind of common background to all students, we offer the following four optional modules: Logic and the Philosophy of Mathematics, Foundations of Physics, Logic in Linguistics and Models in the Social Sciences.
Aims of the programmes: to prepare students for obtaining their PhD degree through acquisition of latest research methodologies, participation in conferences and teaching expertise in higher education.
The ELTE interdisciplinary Semiotics programme at Eötvös Loránd University educates students to become well-trained specialists in semiotics of culture with a global overview of the various fields of humanities: literary studies, linguistics, philosophy, visual arts and general art studies – including approaches to fine arts, films, theatre and music – and also the most contemporary methods of their research synthetised under a semiotic methodological point of view.
The Philosophy programme of Eötvös Loránd University is offered by the Institute of Philosophy at the Faculty of Humanities is a two-year, full-time program comprising four semesters.
The 68 PhD programmes offered at present are part of 6 larger units known as Doctoral Schools. Proof of the exceptionally high standard of education is the ever-growing interest in our programmes.
