The aim of the proposed project is to examine potential role of a neglected niche axis in plants, viz. temporal differentiation of plant growth patterns within a growing season (phenological differentiation). Trimastix is a free-living protist classified into a eukaryotic kingdom Excavata. It thrives in low-oxygen environments, which relates to the fact that its mitochondria are modified into vesicles without cristae with unknown biochemistry and resembling the hydrogenosomes of trichomonads under electron microscope. Indeed, Trimastix is related, although not particularly closely, to parabasalids (e.g. Trichomonas) and fornicates (e.g. Giardia).
Effect of Gregarines on Leishmania Infection in Sand Flies.

Within the proposed PhD project we would like to test the coinfections of the gregarines and L. tropica and study the mechanism of immune response of sand flies to gregarines and Leishmania. We focus on expression of peptides involved in the immune response during Leishmania infection (e.g. defensin, cecropin, TEP and serpin); presences of which we described previously (Boulanger et al., 2004, Dostalova et al., 2011).
